Maas
or Madox
Maas or Madox startet DJing in 94, when in an probably not even drug-induced
phillip K. Dick-like epiphany, some sort of higher or maybe lower,
but in any case very impressive being addressed the young musician,
informing him that from now on he will be a dub warrior, spreading
the good and the bad vibe amongst the people so that they may re-consider
their useless lifes and start getting busy with a world order based
on love, understanding, respect + basically a good time for everyone
equally. His weapons, thus the mysterious but obviously well-meaning
being continued, will be the MK II or any given turntable and his
name would be maas ... or madox if he prefered. This was taken a bit
seriously by our hero, but in contrast to that he started mixing with
a Telefunken and an Elac sort of MK II, plus some tape decks, md-players
an fx-units. DJ Spooky, Dr. Israel, The Word Sound Massive and Adrian
Sherwood gave the clues, Heiner Gobbels, John Zorn and Michael Nyman
added their mustard, the rest was up to this one brain’s creativity...and,
well a whole bunch of records. record store dealers still talk about
that summer with tears in their eyes.
First steps were dj-gigs
at bars so small and useless he won’t remember the names.
Talking of fees, there’s simply nothing to remember. He sold
his flourishing mixing-skills to some sort of crazy australian circus
director, playing famous freakshows like the hebbel-theater berlin
theater im pumpenhaus (bonn) and stadttheater giessen. Meanwhile,
being banned from some dancefloors for burning up monitor speakers
with fellow dj rockateer or strictly strectching the local fashion
rules („we’re a house club, man!“), he ended up
backrooms, returning to hoerspiel-like sets along with video-jockeying
partner camu katse, frying young brains with a positive message
at clubs like lovelite, habermeyer, pfefferberg and even jazzfest
berlin and thus getting closer to the original message from 94.
Additionally, he reformed his forgotten jazzrock-band x.a.cute,
keeping the name, bass and drums and startetd improvising on what
finally came out as the most original, progressive and incomprehensable
dub band in berlin. Concentrating on musical communication and collective
processes, x.a .cute shared stage with vocalists like mc bomsh,
gorby mensah and daredevil dave, guitaruists bert wrede, rico repotente
and yref as well as bands as recorder, strit and sensor.
After x.a.cute concerts maas or madox finally returned to the nice
side of the dj business: rocking crowds really heavy. Starting with
hip-hop-sets with dj ghe at former x.a.cute homebase kurvenstar
in 2000, followed by 3 to 5 hour gigs at supamolly, acud, lovelite
and most notably: carousel theater, where he started with hip-hop,
reggae, turning to house, d&b or kid 606-like breakbeat storms,
often finishing it off with his favorite lard, fehlfarben or jingo
de lunch records. He’s continuing to improve his longform
battle-plans, and if you haven’t been already witness to one
of that events, you better book him right away. Co-operations with
his friend m.path.iq will feature his love for jazzy sounds, and
together with camou katse he hostes the dj-series „the great
avantgarde swindle“ which is actually MorM and catse trying
to be John Peel while drinking a lot of beer. Among his plans for
2003 are an improvising trio with drummer boris raehme and guitar
player michael rodach, a solo hoerspiel-performance, centered around
the works and voice of william s. burroughs, another hoerspiel-production
with anja penner-wenz as well as recording sessions with x.a.cute
for their debut album which should be finished theis year.
"Dear club owners, please book this young man and pay him a
whole lotta money so that he can quit his boring dayjob and can
finally get seriously, seriously busy. Thank you very much."
